Locational Choices of Nonprofit vs. For-Profit Nursing Homes

This project, joint between Prof. Judith Chevalier and Prof. Katja Seim, examines the locational choices of nonprofit vs. for-profit nursing homes. Given the aging population, the capacity, financing, and quality of long term care facilities is a topic of increasing importance. In this industry, facilities owned by for-profit companies compete with facilities organized as not-for-profit organizations. While there have been some investigations of quality differences of these two organizational structures, less attention has been paid to differences in the patient populations served and to the types of locations. In this project, we are estimating a model of the location choices of long term care facilities, separately examining for-profit and non-profit entities. We will decompose differences in the demographics of patients served into predictable given the locations vs. other differences. The research assistant will help with data cleaning and model estimation.
