Researchers studied the relationship between physical production (manufacturing) and innovation (patenting and R&D).
Constructing a new dataset of manufacturing locations and innovation acvitities of U.S. firms, researchers investigate the importance of spatial proximity to manufacturing for innovation. They find that although spatial proximity does improve innovation outcomes, manufacturing overall has declining levels of contribution over time.
