Alumni
Across and within cohorts, IDE alumni have always continued to stay in touch, work together and meet up – even years after graduation. IDE alumni are a family of people who are open minded, have a common interest in development economics and an international outlook on current policy issues.
Alumni Spotlights
Tej Parikh
"The IDE program's strength is in its diversity. It combined the rigour of economic and statistical analysis with the opportunity to develop a deep multidisciplinary understanding of global public policy, alongside students - with varied experiences - from around the world."

Tej Parikh is the Financial Times's economics leader writer. Before joining the FT he was a director of economics at Fitch Ratings and chief economist at the Institute of Directors.
He has also written for numerous international outlets on issues covering global affairs and public policy, and was previously a journalist for The Cambodia Daily in Phnom Penh.
Clare Balboni
“I had a great experience in the IDE program and loved the year I spent at Yale. I am very grateful for the knowledge, skills and experiences I gained, as well as the life-long friends I made in the program.”
- Clare Balboni, Class of 2009
Clare Balboni is an Assistant Professor in Department of Economics at the London School of Economics and Political Science. Her research interests include environmental economics, trade, and development economics.
Susanna Berkouwer
"The Yale IDE program provided a springboard for a rich, multi-faceted, and tailored education into the development economics topics I was most interested in. The core classes deepened my understanding of development economics, and opened my eyes to new applications as my diverse set of classmates shared their experiences. The electives enabled us each to take classes in our chosen areas of expertise, leveraging the full breadth of Yale's offering. At the same time, extracurricular activities such as being a Teaching Fellow, interning at the United Nations, or going on funded research trips all broadened my understanding of how development economics can be used in the real world."
– Susanna Berkouwer, Class of 2013
Susanna B. Berkouwer is an Assistant Professor of Business Economics and Public Policy at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.
Their research spans environmental economics and development economics, with projects studying energy efficiency adoption, carbon offsets, electricity grids, and air pollution from energy usage. They are a Faculty Research Fellow with the National Bureau of Economic Research, an affiliate with J-PAL and with BREAD, and an Associate Editor of the Journal of Development Economics.
Namrata Kala
"The IDE program was an amazing experience. Academically, the program structure with its mix of core and electives provided me with a rigorous foundation for doctoral work as well as the flexibility to explore other related fields. My classmates were a diverse and inspiring group, and the professors encouraged us to challenge ourselves and get the most out of this program. I started a PhD in large part because of the incredible mentorship I received during the program, and I’m still grateful I was able to attend the IDE program when I look back."
– Namrata Kala, Class of 2007
Namrata Kala is an Associate Professor in Applied Economics at the MIT Sloan School of Management.
She is an economist with research interests in environmental and development economics. Her current research projects include studying how firms and households learn about and adapt to environmental change and regulation, the returns to environmental technologies, and the returns to worker training and incentives.
Chelsea Li
"The IDE program was a great fit for me as I wanted to experience the US education system after my bachelors in the UK. The cohort is small enough for me to know my coursemates well, some of whom I am still in touch with until today. It also has a good balance of academic rigour and industry knowledge. I remember how Mike brought in alumnus very often and I was inspired by some of those working in the IMF and the World Bank, so much that I later worked in the UN and World Bank myself. Even though I have moved on from international organisations, I am still very passionate about Economics, and this topic is still very much relevant to my work today where I help Wise with its international expansions, bringing its cross border payment products to many parts of the world, and we can see how government policies shape how capital flows across borders."
– Chelsea Li, Class of 2018
Chelsea Li is an Executive of Strategy & Master Planning in the Singapore Ministry of Social and Family Development.
Nick Tsivanidis
"The IDE program taught me how the tools of development economics are used by researchers and practitioners. It opened my eyes to how research can be used to inform evidence-based policy, and led me to a career in academic research where collaborating with policy makers is at the core of a lot of my work."
– Nick Tsivanidis, Class of 2010
Nick Tsivanidis is an Assistant Professor in the Haas School of Business at the University of California at Berkeley. He is also Co-Director of the Cities Research Programme at the International Growth Centre (IGC).
His interests lie across urban and spatial economics, development and applied macroeconomics. His research centers on connecting theory with empirics that combine new sources of granular data with natural experiments to learn about the process of urbanization in developing countries.
