Funding
Generally, students come to the IDE program with sponsorship from their employer or from their government, or by securing loans from either banking institutions or from their family. International applicants may apply for the Yale International Loan or any loan of their choice. Beginning with the 2022-23 application cycle, EGC has sponsored scholarships to eligible, promising applicants through its Sub-Saharan African Student Scholarship program.
Prospective applicants are encouraged to look into external sources of funding, including the ones listed below:
- American Association of University Women (AAUW) International Fellowships
- Provides support for women pursuing full-time graduate or postdoctoral study in the United States to women who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents, and who intend to return to their home country to pursue a professional career; application deadline is November 15.

- Fulbright Foundation Scholars Program

- Global Rhodes Scholarship
- Open to outstanding young leaders from outside the U.S. who are motivated to engage with global challenges and to promote international understanding and peace; application deadline is June 10.
- U.S. Agency for International Development Payne Fellowship
- Open to U.S. citizens interested in pursuing careers in the Foreign Service of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID); application deadline is October 24.
- The International Peace Scholarship (IPS) Fund
- Scholarships for women from other countries for graduate study in the U.S. or Canada; application deadline is December 15.
- The Margaret McNamara Education Grants
- For women from eligible countries, must already be accepted and registered at university when applying; deadline is January 15.
- Khazanah Global Scholarship Programme
- For Malaysian citizens, this is a government-backed organization that sponsors students to study abroad. They also have an economics research arm which often hires a lot of the economics students they sponsor.
- InLaks
- Applicants from India; must already be accepted and registered at university when applying.
- Narotam Sekhsaria
- Applicants from India; merit-based, interest-free loan scholarships.
- KC Mahindra scholarship
- Applicants from India; interest-free loan scholarships to study abroad.
- Education Future International
- Applicants from India; has rolling deadlines.
- The Aga Khan Foundation International Scholarship Program
- Applicants from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Egypt, India, Kenya, Kyrgyz Republic, Madagascar, Mozambique, Pakistan, Syria, Tajikistan, Tanzania, and Uganda; for outstanding scholars who have no other means of financing their studies

Yale’s Graduate School website gives a list of online databases for fellowships and grants. These databases provide direct access to several hundred grant and fellowship opportunities around the world. Another helpful website is Council of Graduate Schools, which gives a list of graduate fellowship opportunities funded by the U.S. federal government here.
The cost of tuition for 2024-25 is $50,500 and tuition increases yearly by approximately 4%. Yearly living expenses for New Haven are approximately $29,778 per single student.
