Claude

September 15, 2026 Update

  • Faculty and staff now have access to purchase a Claude license under a university-managed enterprise agreement.
    • Schools or departments may sponsor student licenses.
  • Yale’s enterprise agreement offers increased data protections in both a standard environment and a HIPAA-compliant environment that Yale has approved for use with ePHI.
  • Review important information on migrating from your non-enterprise Claude account before submitting a license request.
  • Yale will disable Single Sign-On (SSO) for non-enterprise accounts that use a yale.edu email address on September 22. You can continue to access these non-enterprise accounts via email login.

Details

The university’s standard Claude environment provides access to Claude Chat, Code, and Cowork. We also offer a HIPAA-compliant environment with Claude Chat and Code for individuals working with ePHI or data requiring zero data retention. Additionally, Yale's Claude license provides you with:

  • Easy and secure login: Use your Yale NetID and password to sign in.
  • Enhanced data and privacy protection: Yale administers these accounts. Unlike non-enterprise accounts, Anthropic (Claude’s developer) cannot use enterprise users' prompts or outputs to train its models.
  • Multiple ways to access: Use Claude on the web at claude.ai, through the Claude desktop app (available for download in the Company Portal on managed workstations), and via the Claude mobile app.

Type

Cost

Consumption amount

Standard

$20/month per license

Up to the usage limit for a Standard seat.*

Premium

$50/month per license

A larger amount (~5x standard) of included consumption, up to the usage limit for a Premium seat.*

*Anthropic does not publicly disclose usage limits for licenses. Limits are enforced via a rolling 5-hour window along with a weekly usage cap that resets at a fixed time specific to your account.

Individuals who regularly need more than their included allowance may submit a separate request to modify their consumption cap; usage beyond the allowance is then metered and charged to the COA. Learn more by visiting Understanding your Claude usage, limits, and billing.

A Yale Claude Enterprise license does not automatically cancel an existing personal subscription or move content from your personal account.

Connectors:

  • PubMed will be the first connector turned on in the enterprise account and will be available at launch.
  • The team will continually evaluate other connectors and add them to the enterprise account as deemed appropriate.
  • If you have any connector or feature requests, please submit a request to the Platform Services team.
  • View the current list of connectors and feature requests, along with their status.

Next steps and possible actions required

  • Review Getting Started with Claude at Yale before requesting a license to determine the appropriate environment.
  • Signing in with Yale credentials does not provide Enterprise access until your license request has been fulfilled.

IMPORTANT: If you have a personal Claude account associated with your yale.edu email:

  • Yale will disable SSO for non-enterprise accounts that use a yale.edu email address on September 22. You can continue accessing these non-enterprise accounts via email login.

Before making changes to your personal account:

  • Review Managing an existing personal Claude subscription for information about cancellation, refunds, migration, and account closure.
  • If you want to preserve chats, projects, or other content, review Migrate a personal Claude account to Yale Enterprise. Migration is optional, one-way, and some content does not transfer.
  • Do not close or migrate your personal account until you review the migration guidance and preserved any content that will not transfer.

Yale licensed data resources:

In most cases, copyright and licensing agreements between the university and the vendors that govern these resources prohibit using licensed data resources with AI. If you are unsure how to proceed or need copyright guidance, contact the Yale Copyright Librarian. Additionally, review AI Guidance for Library Resources for more information.
