Modern Supply Side Economics and the Tobin Center

A Fireside Chat with U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen

The Yale Tobin Center welcomes you to join us for a discussion with U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and Yale President Peter Salovey.

The Secretary will discuss one of the driving themes of the federal administration's economic agenda: modern supply side economics. The subject of much media and opinion coverage, it aims, in the Secretary’s words, “to boost economic growth by increasing labor supply, raising productivity, and reducing inequality and environmental damage.” Aspects of modern supply side economics have won enthusiasm across the political spectrum and underpin the administration’s biggest legislative victories.

Modern supply side economics has vast implications for American policy from climate, innovation, tax policy, and infrastructure to workforce training, housing, health, and childcare.

To help the concept come alive, Secretary Yellen and President Salovey will discuss it in the context of Yale Tobin Center’s research and policy work across these areas – much of which has had national impact – as well as Tobin’s founding mandate to enhance diversity in the study of economics, where greater emphasis on modern supply side issues is credited with expanding interest in the field.

The Secretary’s message will call on academic economists and students to consider deploying their talents on issues related to modern supply side economics, but also to study its merits and trade-offs, which Tobin will support. The Secretary will also discuss key issues of the day.

As federal, state and local governments turn their attention to implementing historic federal legislation – and as they consider how best to act where major legislation was not accomplished – we find ourselves at a key moment in U.S. economic policy. The Yale Tobin Center hopes you will be able to join us for this path-defining conversation!
