How do I accomplish my printing needs?

The cheapest way may be to buy the cheapest laser printer you can find. Printing at Yale is rather expensive (10ct/page) and especially for graduate students with a lot of printing needs. To print, click https://paperc-prd-app1.its.yale.edu:9192/user
And log in. Send your file to the black and white queue. Then at the printer – touch your ID Card to the reader and press print. Printers are in the HGS Basement (in the computer room and the McDougal Section), in CSSSI, in all colleges, in the CS Department, 17 Hillhouse, but notably NOT IN THE ECONOMICS DEPARTMENT. Don’t even try and look for them. There is none!

What do I do if I need to miss a class or two?

If you need to miss a class it is not that big a deal. Talk to the Professor before – the earlier the better. Try not to miss the class before break because professors can get VERY annoyed about that. For smaller classes (ca. 6 people) where one person makes up a large share of the discussants – offer that you can do something instead (like a presentation) but in 99% of cases the Professor will say – oh that’s fine. Don’t worry!

Where can I shop for groceries?

On the weekend the Yale Shuttle Systems stops at Stop and Shop. In the week many people share a ZipCar (to which Yale Students get a discount) to drive to Trader Joes, Bharat Bazaar (for international food), Whole Foods and the other Shops on Boston Post Road in Orange. During the week other shopping options in town include the organic but slightly more expensive Elm City Market.

How to access the Undergraduate Colleges for Dining – what are Eli-Bucks?

To access undergraduate dining halls you will have to wait until someone lets you in. You do not have card access to them. You can eat there all week for breakfast, lunch and dinner (You CANNOT go to Berkeley for dinner on Mondays). Saturday all colleges serve brunch and dinner – Morse and Trumbull are also open for breakfast. Sunday you can have brunch and breakfast as on Saturdays but dinner in Berkeley only. To pay you have three options. You can pay by credit card. You can also pay by Eli-Bucks which gives you a 10% discount over credit card but you have to convert USD to Eli-bucks online first. You can also purchase a meal-plan, some of which are even cheaper than Eli-Bucks.

How do I sign up for SOM classes?

First, talk to the SOM course professor well in advance of the sign-up deadline and ask her to sign this paper. Then, sign-up for all non-SOM classes on Yale OCR. Submit your schedule (you will need to re-enter your password to confirm). Yes - you will submit a schedule that looks incomplete. Then take the signed form to Brooke Jones, who will forward this form to the appropriate institutions. The SOM course you want to take will appear online within a few days.

How much will we have to spend on books?

Not that much. For courses with Prof Boozer the lecture notes is all that you need. Any extra help is provided by your friends google and youtube. Sometimes he suggests other complimentary books (e.g. Mostly Harmless Econometrics) and they can be bought for a few bucks second hand on Amazon or your favourite retailer. Some undergrad courses have more expensive (ca. 90USD) text books but often you can buy the previous year’s edition and professors are fine with that.

When can I fly back for Christmas Holidays?

In the past three years the IDE Econometrics Exam was scheduled in the afternoon on the last day of Exam period as published by the Graduate School. The Program has no influence on when the exams are scheduled and it is not possible to take the exam early.

Where do I send my mail to?

For personal mail, we recommend renting a mailbox at the Yale Station Post Office, 206 Elm Street, especially if you live in one of the dorms. For campus mail, we provide mailboxes for IDE students at 27 Hillhouse Avenue, first floor entrance hall. This is where you can receive graded work from your TA, tax and immigration documents, etc. You should check your mailbox regularly. Mail should be addressed like this:

(Students are not allowed to receive personal mail at this address)
