Geanakoplos to Receive Honary PhD from Clark University

John Geanakoplos, the James Tobin Professor of Economics, will receive an honorary Doctor of Science degree from Clark University this year during its 112th commencement. Geanakoplos has a family connection with the university as his mother, Effie Vranos, was one of the first women to graduate from Clark University in 1943. She was also a Fulbright scholar in Greece, where she helped advance the field of social work both abroad and in America before becoming an instructor in psychiatry at the Yale Child Study Center.
Geanakoplos earned his B.A. in Mathematics from Yale and received an M.A. in Mathematics and Ph.D. in Economics from Harvard University. He has taught in the Yale Department of Economics since 1980, where his work focuses on strategic complements and general equilibrium theory. He has co-authored over 80 journal articles, is a Fellow of American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the recipient of the Samuelson Prize and the first Bodossaki Prize in Economics.
Clark University’s commencement will be held on Sunday, May 22 in Worcester, MA.
