Department Welcomes Marina Halac

Marina Halac has been appointed Professor of Economics as recently announced by Department Chair, Dirk Bergemann. She will begin her appointment in the fall 2018 term. Currently a Professor at Columbia University, Graduate School of Business, she has been a visiting faculty member at Yale for the last academic year.

Halac has a Licentiate in Economics from Universidad del Cema, Argentina, and received her Ph.D. in Economics from the University of California, Berkeley.

She was the 2016 recipient of the Elaine Bennett Research Prize, which is awarded biennially by the American Economic Association to recognize outstanding research by a woman, and in 2017, she was named one of the “World’s Best 40 under 40 Business School Professors” by Poets and Quants.

Halac’s research is in contract theory and game theory. Much of her work is concerned with the provision of incentives and how these are shaped by contracting constraints and the information environment. She has developed theoretical models to study the structure and dynamics of employment relationships, the problem of how to motivate experimentation and innovation, and the design of rules to optimally delegate decision making, among other questions. Halac’s work has been published in leading journals including the American Economic Review, Econometrica, the Journal of Political Economy, and the Review of Economic Studies. She currently sits on the Editorial Boards of the American Economic Review, Econometrica, the Review of Economic Studies, and Theoretical Economics.

While visiting Yale, Halac co-taught ECON 159a, Game Theory with María Sáez Martí in the fall 2017 term, and is co-teaching ECON 521b, Advanced Microeconomic Theory II in the 2018 spring term with Stephen Morris and Juuso Välimäki.
