Three Grads Selected to Attend Lindau Meeting on Economic Sciences

Ph.D. students Daisuke Adachi, Ian Ball, and Allen Vong have been selected among 373 Young Economists from 60 countries to attend the 7th Lindau Meeting on Economic Sciences. Participants for the meeting are recruited worldwide among the most promising young scholars in economic sciences.

“It is a great honor to be able to participate in the meeting,” said Adachi via an email.  “It is one of the most exceptional opportunities to learn from the Nobel Laureates and other brilliant colleagues in the world, share their ideas, and create the network,” he continued.

Vong echoed Adachi’s sentiments saying, “I am grateful for this unique opportunity to participate in the Lindau meeting, which, I am sure, will be an amazing event.”  

Ball commented that he looks forward to attending next summer. “It will be exciting to meet so many young researchers from around the world,”he  said.

Adachi and Vong are both fifth-year students. Adachi’s field of interest is international trade, while Vong studies microeconomic theory, with a focus on dynamic games and information economics.  Ball is the lone sixth-year student whose field of intest is economic theory. All three students were scheduled to attend the meeting in August, however, because of the COVID-19 virus pandemic, the meeting has been postponed until next year.

To help bridge the gap, the Lindau organization will be holding online lectures and discussion for the participants in June. Although disappointed that the in-person meeting was cancelled, he said he is excited to interact with the Nobel Laureates and other great young scholars twice.

The selection process begins with eligible students applying to one of the official academic partners of the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings with an accompanying letter of recommendation and relevant materials. Successful nominees are reviewed by a panel of the Council for the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings for final selection. A subset of selected scientists is allowed to present in the meeting.

Adachi said he is grateful to his adviser, Costas Arkolakis, for his letter of recommendation; fellow Ph.D. students who suggested and supported the application; the staff at the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (official academic partner for his application) who guided him through the internal selection process; and his wife and cat for their invaluable mental care.

Vong thanked his advisers, Johannes Hörner,  Marina Halac, and Larry Samuelson for guiding and supporting him over the years, and especially Larry Samuelson for the nomination.

Ball thanked his adviser, Dirk Bergemann, for nominating him.
