Costas Meghir delivers the Fisher-Schultz Lecture at European Economic Association

Trade and Informality in the Presence of Labor Market Frictions and Regulations
EGC affiliate Costas Meghir of Yale Economics delivered the Fisher-Schultz Lecture at the Econometric Society European Meetings (ESEM) on August 25. The event was held in conjunction with the Summer Meeting the meeting of the European Economic Association (EEA) online and at the Bocconi University in Milan. The Econometric Society will post a video of the lecture shortly.
Meghir's lecture was titled "Trade and Informality in the Presence of Labor Market Frictions and Regulations" based on joint work with Pinelopi Koujianou Goldberg – also of EGC and Yale Economics – Rafael Dix-Carneiro of Duke University, and Gabriel Ulyssea of University College London. It focused on the impact of trade liberalization in the presence of a large informal sector, which is a feature of many developing countries.
The Fisher-Schultz Lecture is an Econometric Society event given annually by a non-European member of the EEA who is appointed one year in advance by Summer Meetings programmers. The lecture was named in honor of prominent American economists Irving Fisher and Henry Schultz.
The 2022 EEA Congress and Econometric Society European Meeting took place August 22-26 and consisted of five invited sessions and 102 contributed events featuring some of the world’s leading economists. Close to 1,200 registered participants attended both in Milan and via Zoom from many countries around the World. The Meeting also served as the EEA's World Congress, which takes place every five years.
