Cowles Hosts 16th Annual Conference on General Equilibrium and the 65th Birthday of John Geanakoplos

Cowles Conference

A stellar cast of speakers and 100 attendees celebrated Cowles 16th Annual Conference on General Equilibrium and its Applications and the 65th Birthday of John Geanakoplos. The program was organized by Geanakoplos’ former PhD students Stephen Morris, Felix Kubler, Paul Willen, and Ana Fostel, and by frequent co-author Herakles Polemarchakis. Of Geanakoplos’ 35 PhD students, 19 came to the conference. His Harvard PhD classmate Larry Summers gave the first dinner speech followed by his Yale College freshman roommate Jeremy Bulow, then co-author Pradeep Dubey and a host of students. Another Yale college classmate Joe Altonji was in attendance, and another Yale college classmate Ken Rogoff was there in spirit.

The three-day conference covered a range of subjects on which Geanakoplos has worked, including macro-financial fluctuations, endogenous credit cycles, heterogeneous beliefs, asset pricing, general equilibrium, information transmission, agent based models, limited cognition, and a bonus talk on machine learning in nonconvex games. The speakers were Guido Lorenzoni, Marios Angeletos, Ivan Werning, Bill Zame, Eduardo Davila, Sebastian Merkel, Alp Simsek, Maryam Farboodi, Stavros Panageas, Xavier Gabaix, Jeremy Bulow, Omer Tamuz, Costis Daskalakis, Doyne Farmer, and Michael Woodford.
