We believe machine learning, combined with rigorous statistics and behavioral science, gives us a fresh new way to approach critical questions in health and health policy. For example, one of our projects creates a machine learning algorithm to identify patients at high risk for heart attack. We can look at physicians’ decisions through this lens — ‘what would the algorithm have done with this same patient, using the same data the physician had available to her?’— to identify cognitive errors, and estimate just how much we could improve testing decisions by augmenting physicians with algorithms. We can also use these tools to make fundamental new discoveries in health, not just health care: by mining medical data (like ECG waveforms, or x-rays) for signals too complex subtle
for the human eye to see, we can find new drivers of illness and uncover new treatments.

We welcome candidates with strong technical backgrounds who are looking for more exposure to the role data science has to play in healthcare.
