The Department of Economics is proud to release its 2024 Annual Magazine, a celebration of exceptional scholarship, teaching, and milestones. Building on the momentum of recent years, the Department continues to thrive—welcoming new faculty, publishing leading research, earning prestigious awards, inspiring undergraduates, placing PhD graduates in top positions, and hosting pathbreaking research conferences.
A number of faculty members received significant awards this year, and we are pleased to highlight Professor Philipp Strack, who received the 2024 John Bates Clark Medal. Widely regarded as the most prestigious honor awarded to younger American economists, the Medal recognizes Professor Strack’s innovative contributions to microeconomic theory and acknowledges his role as both a brilliant thinker and an extraordinarily supportive colleague.
The Department’s faculty ranks have grown once again, strengthening and expanding our expertise. We are delighted to welcome Professor Timothy Christensen (econometrics), Assistant Professor Mayara Felix (trade and development), Assistant Professor Joel Flynn (macroeconomics and economic theory), Associate Professor Elliot Lipnowski (economic theory), and Associate Professor Pascual Restrepo (macroeconomics and labor economics) to our community. In addition, Cody Cook (labor and public economics) joins us this year as a Cowles Foundation Postdoctoral Associate and will transition to an Assistant Professor role in 2025-26.
We also honor the retirement of William Nordhaus, a Yale alumnus, longtime faculty member, Provost, and recipient of the 2018 Nobel Prize in Economics for his pioneering work on climate change. Professor Nordhaus, who earned his Bachelor’s degree here in 1963, leaves an indelible legacy of scholarship, mentorship, and visionary thinking. He retires as the Sterling Professor of Economics, Yale’s highest academic rank.
The undergraduate economics program continues to set milestones, with over 350 seniors majoring in economics or one of its joint majors. The Department’s introductory courses are perennially among Yale College’s most-enrolled courses, including Introductory Macroeconomics in spring 2024, taught by Fabrizio Zilibotti, and Introductory Microeconomics in fall 2024 taught by Cormac O’Dea.
Meanwhile, our PhD program thrives: at this year’s Commencement, we awarded 20 new doctoral degrees, placing graduates in top universities, firms, and government agencies. Current doctoral candidates shine as well—our students have published in leading journals and earned honors such as the prestigious Prize Teaching Fellowships.
The Department’s Predoctoral Fellows program, run in conjunction with the Tobin Center for Economic Policy, now boasts 219 total Fellows since 2019, with 69 Fellows currently supporting 85 faculty members. Guided by Senior Lecturer Rebecca Toseland, predocs gain invaluable research experience and professional development, contributing to the intellectual vibrancy of the Department.
Through faculty publications and our affiliated centers, the Department has made significant achievements in research. Yale economists continued to publish in top journals, and each center hosted major conferences, bringing together global scholars to advance frontiers in health economics, market design, machine learning, climate change, international development, and more.
As you explore this year’s Annual Magazine, you will find:
- A letter from the Department Chair, reflecting on five years of growth, renewal, and the Department’s commitment to excellence in research and teaching;
- Profiles of our new faculty and an interview with Nobel laureate William Nordhaus;
- Updates from our research centers, featuring insights into the year’s major conferences, workshops, and collaborative projects;
- Research features, highlighting new work on marriage markets, international trade, how narratives can affect the macroeconomy, and a new index that measures losses in global economic growth due to gender gaps in the labor market;
- Recognition of our undergraduate and graduate students’ remarkable achievements, including prestigious awards, publications, and successful job placements; and
- A closer look at our Predoctoral Fellows program, which nurtures tomorrow’s economic scholars.
We are proud of the Department’s accomplishments and invite you to share in this excitement as you read the 2024 Annual Magazine. Whether you are a member of the Yale community, an alum, a collaborator, or a friend of the Department, we thank you for supporting our efforts to promote world class learning and research.
